Depends how broad your definition of “left wing”, and also the length of your calendar.
The anti-Vietnam and anti-draft people were left wing, but it’s been more than 40 years since they had anything to be upset about. The Earth First eco-warriors are… arguably left wing, but they’re not doing so much monkey-wrenching anymore. The DAPL people didn’t start the violence, but it’s possible they’re being assigned responsibility. All that’s really left is the WTO protests and antifa.

Technically I’m still on the village board until December 10. After that, they’ll have to start paying me, and I’m still waiting for the VA to tell me whether that would interfere with my disability pay. There is no way they can afford to make that up.
The likely outcome is I won’t be the village water operator after the end of December.

The people who say you deserved to lose to a Neo-Nazi are that same type of person. Also due to the geological make up of the region, there is really no saving it. In some regions, you can build dikes and levees to prevent flooding, but because of underlying geography of Florida, that wouldn’t work. There are just too many ways for water to make it inland both on the surface and thru countless underground channels to ever stop it.

The 90s were the death rattle of the southern conservative Democrats. Clinton and Gore during that time, especially in the early 90s, were closer to being southern conservative Democrats than to being progressives (that’s where Clinton’s third way stuff came from).

I think Bush was considered from Texas. Since that was his residency at the time. (I also remember, vaguely, someone on Fox or maybe Limbaugh, saying Gore won his home state of DC as some sort of joke/criticism)
Interestingly, Nixon in 1968 was considered a New Yorker rather than a Californian - but in every other national race he ran (‘52, ‘56, ‘60, and ‘72) he was considered a Californian.

That sorta depends on how you define “home state”. Is it where you were born, where you spent high school or college, where you began your career? Trump did win Arkansas…
And in 2000; Bush won Tennessee, but Gore won Bush’s birthplace state of Connecticut.

No, you’re right which is why I said if you want to get real pedantic about it heh. Anyhow Gore messed up on TN but he hadn’t ran there as himself in ten years. TN and Gore himself had changed. Gore was always pretty steady Eddie on the environmental issues but not a social liberal which IMO explains why the South has grown reliably Republican and the West coast equally Democratic. I disagree with the thesis people vote with their checkbooks. They vote with their value system.

Unions never took up there. It’s why people like D’Sousa are being obtuse to just bring up the party label of Dixiecrats and act like they were liberals or even leftist.
You have to consider the broader history of the region. Most all of it’s history has been defined by race. Unions and left wing populism would have served to benefit black people as well, and that on a deep seated level has always been a problem for many white folks in the South. There’s a reason why when Social Security first passed, the Dixiecrats insisted on the qualifying age being higher than the life expectancy of black people at the time.
Lincoln was born in Kentucky, also spent sometime in Indiana but he’s Illinois since that’s where he practiced law, was elected to Congress from, & ran against Stephen Douglas in 1858 for Senate. Wilson likewise born in Va but raised throughout the South due to his fathers job as a traveling minister is NJ since he was President of Princeton and NJ’s governor.

Unions and left wing populism would have served to benefit black people as well, and that on a deep seated level has always been a problem for many white folks in the South. There’s a reason why when Social Security first passed, the Dixiecrats insisted on the qualifying age being higher than the life expectancy of black people at the time.
They also insisted that it specifically exclude agricultural and domestic workers, which is how 90% of black southerners earned their living.

Oh I know. I actually have an old Stars and Stripes article where my grandfather a Pittsburgh native and nlrb man explains why unionism had to that point (mid 60’s) not taken off in the South. I think immigration plays a role too. The European immigrants brought the trade union ideas with them.

Didn’t know that about Bill tbh.
It makes sense when you consider his “safe, legal, and rare” stuff during the campaigns.
That said, Bill Clinton (or someone like him) was necessary to eventually get someone like Obama. It’s sort of the converse of conservatives needing someone like Nixon (who really wasn’t that conservative, at least for his time) in order to get to someone like Reagan.

Good analogy. I see Clinton and Nixon as interesting since Clinton is a lot more conservative than he sells himself as or how he’s perceived and Nixon likewise liberal though from what I read Nixon wasn’t interested in domestic policies at all and just finding a reasonable middle ground.

My college history paper on Nixon written Obama’s first year I think was accurately titled the Last New Dealer. Nixon may have gotten elected opposing much of the New Deal and the New Dealers certainly didn’t see him as one of their own but I feel in practice he had more in common with them than Clinton, Carter, & Obama. Of course he had a Dem majority in Congress and Bill and Obama had Republican ones for good chunks of their terms.

Florida Man.
ESPN - Man who created racist post of FSU coach Willie Taggart being lynched is fired
The man responsible for a racist social media post showing Willie Taggart getting lynched has been fired from his job at Hilton Grand Vacations, the company said in a statement Monday.
“Our concern regarding this situation has been a top priority,” Lauren George, a spokesperson for Hilton Grand Vacations, said of the unnamed employee. “The person responsible for posting this information has been terminated. His behavior was in violation of multiple company policies and the furthest example from being a reflection of our company’s values.”
The racist post was made in a Florida State fan group on Facebook on Saturday, shortly after the Seminoles lost to rival Florida 41-14 to finish a 5-7 season. It showed Taggart’s head edited onto an image of a man being lynched with the words “Believe in Something Even If It Means Sacrificing Your Rep,” alluding to the recent Nike ad campaign featuring Colin Kaepernick.
The meme went viral after the man posted it in the comments section on the fan group page. Florida State president John Thrasher condemned the post Sunday, calling it “ignorant and despicable.” The Florida State Attorney for the Second Judicial Circuit is investigating.
Taggart, the first black football head coach in Florida State history, was hired last December from Oregon. Florida State posted the school’s first losing season since 1976 and failed to qualify for a bowl game for the first time since 1981.

Tweety’s book Kennedy & Nixon is a great read, if you haven’t read it already. The two of them were actually pretty good friends up until 1960 (or the Kennedys really were assholes and were using Nixon). There’s a bit about how Kennedy first ran for Congress as a “fighting conservative” and Nixon as a “practical liberal.”
I used to adore FDR fwiw but I’m more nuanced on him. Appreciate the New Deal but know groups were thrown under the bus to get southern votes and of course internment.

Cool. Yeah I knew they were friends early but didn’t know JFK ran as a conservative. Knew that Nixon didn’t really ever until much later run as a conservative. Even McCarthy record wise wasn’t super right wing. There were other senators in both parties more conservative.

It’s a lot like the Founders, if you judge them by modern standards, they’re at best hypocrites and at worse, very terrible people for the most part. If you judge them by the standards of their time, they’re less terrible. Yep Clinton signed DOMA after all. With FDR for me, it’s while I do appreciate things like war time leadership, the New Deal, and I do feel he got us out of the Depression, I do see his flaws more as I’ve read more. There’s a new biography out on his 1940 opponent, Wendell Wilkie who I think was a great man but wouldn’t have been able to do what FDR did in WWII. FWIW I think all four FDR’s opponents were quality guys. I don’t really have too much critical to say of Hoover(I do feel he messed up on the Depression in many ways but I don’t feel he was a bad guy, just someone who was out of touch with how to respond to a crisis like that), Landon(Very interesting guy who died only a year before I was born in 1986 and ended up championing a lot of the Great Society and whose daughter served with Bob Dole in the Senate), Wilkie (great guy especially on foreign issues, really pissed me off that Zell Miller tried to liken himself to him in his 2004 RNC keynote), and Dewey (Liked the 1948 version better but 1944 was still solid.) TBH I find more to like than dislike about most of the GOP candidates until Goldwater in 1964. I’m probably voting a straight Dem line from 1932-1964 for President but I’m not disappointed when Ike wins even though he did create the Nixon beast but Nixon in the late 40’s through early 60’s was a different guy than the guy who courted Strom Thurmond later.

Now speaking of what would make interesting books at least for people like me, I’d like to see a biography of James Cox who was the poor guy who had to replace the very unpopular Wilson at the top of the ballot in 1920. He got beaten badly at the polls by Harding but he was a strong supporter of the League of Nations, believe he opposed prohibition(which yes is why my username is HappyWarrior in tribute to Al Smith but also HHH), and wasn’t as bigoted as Wilson was about PoC. Harding the more I look at him. I still see a bad President who deserves a lot of criticism but I like him more than i do Coolidge, by far my least favorite Republican President pre-WWII.

Even if Eisenhower doesn’t pick Nixon as his running mate, it’s entirely likely that Nixon runs for president at some point anyway. He was a Representative at 34, and a Senator by 37.
It’s so difficult to look at the past though because inevitably you use your modern biases to judge men and women who were born years ago. As I’ve been telling people about the Civil War, I have zero illusions about my second grandfather. I doubt he was an abolitionist let alone a believer in equality of the races but even if he was, men like him were the exception for that era. Now consequently that is exactly why we should champion and remember men like Senator Sumner who was famously cained on the floor of Congress or Thaddeus Stevens who were well ahead of their day on many issues.

Definitely and I think he would have been a frontrunner since Ike I believe considered a Democrat as his running mate. Also worthy of note is that Nixon’s handpicked successor as Republican standard bearer was not Reagan or Ford but John Connally, former Democratic governor of Texas who was in the motorcade when JFK was killed and later his Treasury Secretary and who later did run in 1980 but struggled against Bush and Reagan. I think that’s teh tragedy of it all. To use football, the Nixon re-election campaign was the Patriots in the Deflategate game. Though TBH a lot of the stuff that preceded Watergate definitely did lead to them getting McGovern. McGovern really came out of nowhere to be the nominee in ‘72 though he had some recon to getting the support of the former RFK delegates in the infamous 1968 DNC.

The thing though is politicians change with the times too. Sometimes it’s flip flopping but sometimes people do change. Now sometimes it’s pure cynicism marking that transformation with how Romney went from when he ran against Teddy Kennedy in 1994 for the Senate trying to out-left him on LGBT rights to accusing the Obama administration of forcing SSM when Obama announced his personal support of SSM prior to Obergefell but people do change with the times. That said, I always found the old Southern Democrats who had voted for the party when it was at its most economically lefty claiming that Bill Clinton or Obama had made it too liberal for them.

GHW Bush was a remnant of an older Republican Party. The son of a Senator tied into the New England establishment. And at that point, the conservative movement had not yet fused with the Republican Party.

I believe there are rumos that Larry O’Brien, DNC Chair had incriminating info on Nixon’s brother Don regarding something between Don and Howard Hughes. It definitely wasn’t necessary. Nixon’s rise and fall would have made a great Shakespeare play and TBH while I enjoyed Frost-Nixon and I hear Nixon in China is good too, the better Nixon story is literally his life story. Probably one of the most modest backgrounds and most tragic of any modern American President- lost two brothers to TB by the time he was 20 and his rise in national politics was amazing. He went from being a Freshman Congressman to VP in six years. Now Obama did it in four but in that era, I think ti was more incredible. But his fall was so ugly but then there’s the other story where he enjoyed something of a reputation reboot since nearly every President after him sought out his advice on FP.

That’s right. I’m just surprised he was able to do as well as he did against Reagan who was coming off nearly ousting incumbent Ford in the primary in 1976. My dad’s father, the same NLRB grandfather was disturbed by the rise of Reaganism. Likewise, my mom’s father didn’t have much use for Ronnie either. I actually and I definitely see a lot of his flaws both as President and politician have a lot to like about H.W. Bush in some ways. I don’t think his judicial legacy is bad, I like the Clean Air Act and on the spectrum I love ADA, and I think he was solid on foreign policy too. Whether you agree with the fact that we showed a double standard or not with Iraq, I think it was the right thing to protect Kuwait’s sovereignty.

Yeah there’s a lot that can be said about Nixon, the man, the president, and diplomat but he knew FP and honestly he had a lot wisdom on it that man would have been better put to better use. As I said, I find Nixon tragic. I am willing to consider there might be a Mark Felt type working in the shadows against Trump.
I go by the simple thinking there are always good people in every situation. It takes time for them to get a feel for what is going on, the danger if they talk and then they decide to surface, and once they do, we may never know about them until years later. Just like Mark Felt.

I know this isn’t a popular position around here, but, I have always been fascinated by Reagan. I don’t think he was as conservative as he played, and in a lot of ways probably got captured a bit by the evangelical movement. But he was far from the doctrinaire that many of those who came after him were - he wasn’t afraid to raise taxes after cutting them, and I don’t think he was a pro-life true believer (otherwise he wouldn’t have appointed O’Connor or Kennedy). He clearly had his failings - racebaiting and being slow to act on AIDS/HIV being at the top of the list.

Would it? Legally, I mean. IANAL, but I have read a lot of analysis that has had to admit that the Presidential pardon power is fairly broad: and that barring some situation, say, documenting an illegal quid pro quo with notarized signatures (and even Trump isn’t that stupid), there’s not much that can be done about it.
Of course, Trump pardoning Manafort would be taken (outside of the deluded Deplorable “base”) pretty much as an admission of guilt, but I wonder how much that would count for in a court of law….?

It would be an obstruction of justice (as well as witness tampering) on the part of Trump and/or his goons if one of them contacted Manafort with an offer of a pardon in exchange for refusal to cooperate fully with federal prosecutors. But that assumes that Mueller has evidence that such a quid pro quo was ever offered.

Right. I think Iran Contra needs more scrutiny and his shift from the executive branch that tried to be even handed between labor and management to one that explicitly favored management. As a descendant of union men and a nlrb lifer, I can’t forgive that especially as wealth disparities began their rise in his presidency. He is fascinating I agree tho. I’m going through it because my birth certificate does not match my everything else. When I got my first license to drive in California (wasn’t easy, lemme tell ya. Ha! Anyhow. Thing about Reagan that he’s not hit nearly hard enough for by the historians IMO is the ethics. Was changing the channel and there’s something on Showtime about the Reagan administration and Iran Contra and the shredding of documents and the perjury. I have never forgotten about how Oliver North was made into a hero over that crap. He disgraced the uniform yet he got nominated for the Senate, got his own show on FNC, and now is a top gun (pun intended) at the NRA. Pat Brown’s popularity was waning by 1966. He only got 52% in the Democratic primary that year. There were the Watts Riots and the early Vietnam protests at Berkeley. He had also promised not to seek a third term and then went back on that. Plus, at the time California still leaned Republican statewide at the time.

Re: Reagan, although it’s a nice line, I never bought his “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party it left me” line. Reagan was born in 1911. The Democratic Party he came of age in and indeed supported as a young actor was very much the New Deal Party. I don’t want to suggest that embracing civil rights was the reason why Reagan felt uncomfortable with the direction of the Democratic party after FDR’s death in 1945 but it is interesting to me that he had no problem with the Dems and the New Deal but started drifting right when the Dems started advocating civil rights. I dunno. I don’t see Reagan as being like Wallace or Thurmond but I do think he’s more like them than he isn’t on race and I guess that’s another huge strike against him for me.

Didn’t know that either! I do remember reading that Henry Wallace who famously challenged Truman from the left in ‘48 drifted right and later supported Ike’s re-election and later Nixon. His family seems to be pretty liberal like ours is but I don’t know which way Nana’s other two sisters and her brother the priest leaned, though I have heard her brother was pretty liberal for his time not just racially but on theology too- he told his sister’s mother in law that she shouldn’t feel worried about attending a wedding in a Protestant church. No big deal to us now but you know how it was for Catholics and Protestants brought up in the 19th century.

I believe it’s time for James Carville, who dejectedly declared that there was no Blue Wave, to retire. Most of the pundits who spent their careers dealing solely with Election Day voting are increasingly all at sea in the new era of early voting, large numbers of absentee ballots, and vote-by-mail.

Didn’t know that either! I do remember reading that Henry Wallace who famously challenged Truman from the left in ‘48 drifted right and later supported Ike’s re-election and later Nixon. I do give Wallace credit for admitting he was wrong about the Soviets. I have heard that my Pap-Pap, my Nana’s father hated Truman but my Dad’s cousin never explained whether it was for lefty or righty reasons. Henry Wallace edited The New Republic in the 50s. At that time TNR was to the left of The Nation. Wallace continually blasted McCarthy and that’s why he drifted to backing Ike in 1956.

Aha! I didn’t know that there was a time when TNR was to left of TN. Why did his dislike of Tailgunner Joe lead him to back Ike though? I mean I know Ike was no McCarthy ally but he certainly wasn’t an active critic like Adlai Stevenson was. But getting to McCarthy, you bring to me to another conservative, William F. Buckley and NRO and why I refuse to take them seriously or paid credence to the idea of WFB as a man of reason, WFB started as a McCarthy apologist.

I have no problem with it being a landmark as long as it’s mentioned in large letters that a traitor lived there who got away with it. I have a lot I admire about Abraham Lincoln but I think the Radical Republicans had the right idea of a harsh reconstruction for the South. I don’t know if the leaders of the CSA should have been hanged or not- I’m passionately anti death penalty but I do believe they should have been punished more severely for bringing about and enduring the most bloody conflict on our soil.

I think his method of calculating votes hadn’t adjusted to how people vote now. The easy-to-count votes, in the first places to post results didn’t look good. I blame Florida, actually. The polls looked better for Gillum than for Nelson, and looked good for both, but both ended up losing narrowly. Florida was the first to report on Election night, and boy, did it feel like a replay of 2016, with people saying “The Democrats just aren’t getting all they need here”.
Honestly, I started having a PTSD replay of 2016. But it got better. And it keeps getting better.
And if Cindy Hyde Smith has managed to torpedo her chances in what should have been a walk for her, that will be the icing on the cake - 40 seats in the House, and holding the GOP to 1 seat with the most brutal map of my lifetime? That’d be spectacular.

Weeks ago, a site I was following said that the race was too close to call and then, once the Democrat was only .4% behind, asserted that the Democrat was now favored to win. So even though there were thousands of votes to be counted, no one was persuaded to change their calls for the Republican.
I envy that Mars rover. It’s one of the few manmade things that’s completely safe from Donald Trump.
Frank and other Californians though, one of my friends in California pointed something interesting out about this win, apparently Cox considered running in CA-10 there were too many running there so they instead persuaded him to run in CA-21 where no one was and the Dems ended up taking back both. Big pat on the back to Ben Ray Lujan- had to look him up and the DCCC for doing a great job recruiting candidates and supporting them. Definitely hope he’s part of leadership in the future. The plant-closing news from GM this week, along with the hugely increased deficit which drives up interest rates, the Kashogghi murder, Russia attacking Ukraine again, and NK’s continued nuclear missile development program - all this has the feeling of turning a corner.
I kinda feel like we’re starting to see the wheels come off, with the flashy “accomplishments” all turning out to be illusory, because they were always stupid, but maybe not so obviously. Take North Korea, for example. CLEARLY, KJU played Trump like Isaac Stern played the violin, but to those not paying attention, it LOOKED like ‘Peace In Our Time’. Now the CIA assesses NK has ben developing their capabilities right along, and it’s becoming obvious to all but his idiot base that this is what happened.
Or the tax cut - it was NEVER going to do much, certainly not raise wages, but it made a splash, and allowed Trump to post a couple good quarters of GDP numbers from the ‘sugar high’. Now that’s faded, and the all-too-real deficit increase is facing us.
Trump is all about flash, appearance, and instant gratification. He’s about making a big impression and getting people to put in money. Then he takes his cut and moves on to the next thing. Later on, you find that he didn’t pay contractors, and screwed investors, and that THREE casinos in Atlantic City was a stupid idea.
He’s been doing the Presidency the same way - make grand gestures, make headlines, get praise. The problem is, there’s not a next project for him to move on to. Now his failures will start mounting. The economy will slow down, possibly even go into recession. That will drive the deficit even higher. GM’s plant closings will be followed by more and more as Trump’s trade war starts taking its toll. NK will keep building nukes and using the legitimacy Trump gave them, join the Community Of Nations as a nuclear power. Russia will keep picking at NATO. And Trump has already done what he knows how to do - hold a summit, sign a piece of paper, declare victory, and go home.

I do wonder if the economy starts to go south a little- I hope not but a realistic possibility given his policies, could we see the makings of a landslide? I think it’s vital not only to defeat Trump but fix his policies in a way that will prevent a future Trump type from taking over.
This is my congresswoman, as soon as she’s sworn in. Her opponent had the absentee ballots from the winner’s county impounded, because Ms. Loser had gone to bed thinking she was Ms. Winner, before those 8,000+ ballots had been counted. She woke up as a loser, and felt cheated. No evidence of cheating has been found.
I think the pundit class focuses way too much on the fact that Trump’s got a higher floor than most do but he’s got a much lower ceiling. I don’t think he’s ever been above 50% in approval and I don’t see that changing unless he gets kidnapped and replaced with a changeling who acts totally differently than the Trump of the past 71 years.

I think we’re in a different world from the 1980s and before, where you could envision one party taking >40 states. Just by virtue of being the GOP candidate, Trump would have a hard floor at 45%.
However, it is starting to feel like a hard ceiling, too.

It’s not a question of “if” so much as “when.” The current bets are either late next year or early 2020, which would mean Donny trying to get reelected as the guy who took an economy that was humming along and killed it. Dubya had the good fortune that he’d paced his Tax Cuts and deregulation enough to goose good numbers out of the economy in time for his reelection. Donny is gonna face the exact opposite, with his need to post good numbers before the midterms causing the few benefits of the Tax Cuts to be front-loaded and all the drawbacks to come out the very next year.
To get an idea of how bad this is going to look, the IRS announced a few weeks ago that their estimates of people who actually gonna end up owing money on their taxes next year due to the changes to deductions has gone up by 3 million. In other words, 10% of the country is going to owe more in taxes next year that they would have without the Tax Cuts. So when you have millions of Americans who are planning their spending around the idea of a tax refund instead get told by the guy at H&R Block that they actually owe…yeah, not gonna be pretty.

Moulton really shot his career in the foot with this. I wouldn’t encourage primarying him but bye bye any hope of being in leadership in the future Seth.
Speaking of Moulton, he’s apparently learned that his Quixotic quest to be the guy to finally bring down Nancy Pelosi is political suicide, so he’s chosen instead to use his total lack of leverage to “negotiate” with her about the other leadership positions. I think he might have better luck there, as unseating Hoyer would be more politically palatable in the current environment.

I kinda feel like we’re starting to see the wheels come off, with the flashy “accomplishments” all turning out to be illusory, because they were always stupid, but maybe not so obviously.
I was reading the Wonkette article from the last week that dealt with the idiot soybean farmers who backed Trump. They’re all taking a shellacking and plowing under crops because their White KKKnight in Shining Armor’s tariffs caused China to buy their soybeans elsewhere.
I really don’t wish financial ruin on anyone, but goddamn; it is really hard to feel bad for these people. Five fucking minutes of Googling the phrase “Trump business practices” should have alerted anyone with minimal brainwave activity that this jackass couldn’t run a lemonade stand, let alone the country.

Republicans constantly feel they must remind us that they consider the whole of the 20th century (except that short period in the 1950s when they think America was totally awesome) a total mistake and would change everything back if they had the power to do so.

It’s not that she’s a Republican FLOTUS. I actually like the two other Republican first ladies we had in my lifetime that I remember and I can’t say enough great things about Betty Ford who was before my time but an awesome FLOTUS and I love how Jerry treated her.
